Uday Tiwary
Amritsar Train Accident on Dussehra: Dussehra is considered a symbol of the victory of good over evil. On this day, effigies of Ravana, Meghnad and Kumbhakaran are burnt all over the country. Millions of people gather to see them. Children are also eagerly waiting for this day and they want to save it as a good memory. But once such a wretched evening also came, when the train left crushing 59 people gathered around the railway line to see Dussehra.
After the train passed, when people started searching for their loved ones, only their mutilated limbs were lying there and dozens of families were orphaned. What was that wretched night and where did that painful accident happen, today we tell you in detail about this.
It was the year 2018. That year, Dussehra was celebrated on October 19. The people of Amritsar city of Punjab were very excited to see the Dussehra festival. The main event was to be held at the ground near the railway line, where effigies of Ravana, Kumbhakaran and Meghnad were made. At that time, Captain Amarinder Singh's government was in power in Punjab. BJP leader Navjot Kaur Sidhu was the MP from Amritsar.
No whistle was heard in loud-speakers
In the evening, Navjot Kaur Sidhu arrived at the ceremony. With this, the pressure of the crowd at the venue increased a lot. As there was a shortage of space in the ground, people reached the nearby railway lines. By then, thousands of people had gathered at the ground. Gradually darkness had fallen and the sight on the track had also stopped. A passenger train reached there with a loud horn, but due to loudspeakers playing loudly in the Dussehra pandal, people could not hear the whistle of the train.
Train passes by cutting people
When the train suddenly reached nearby, there was a stampede among the people. People ran here and there to save their lives. But the crowd was so large that many people could not even move and the train passed by crushing them. When the train left, the search for loved ones began. But there was nothing left except dead bodies. In this incident, 59 people were killed, whose limbs were scattered everywhere. Where there was an atmosphere of joy and celebration a little while ago, now there was the noise of screams and poignant cries. No one could understand what to do.
The whole country was drowned in mourning
As soon as the information about the accident was received, the district administration of Amritsar became active and the process of taking the survivors to the hospital started. This terrible accident on Dussehra drenched the whole country with grief. Eyewitnesses of the incident said that if the train driver had honked beforehand, the people standing on the track could have had more chance to escape. They were also hurt that instead of helping the victims, MP Navjot Kaur Sidhu left immediately after the accident.
Still waiting for compensation today
According to the people, despite such a big accident, CM Captain Amarinder Singh reached the spot several hours later. Which shows their insensitivity. Now every year Dussehra comes and goes, but this day gives nothing but sorrow to the victims of Amritsar. After this incident, the Punjab government had announced compensation to the victims, but even after so many years, many people are still waiting for this announcement to be fulfilled.
